Philly Scouts may get the boot

BSA logoAccording to a Yahoo! News/Associated Press news article, the Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been told by the Philadelphia City Council to pay up or move out.

The City has fought with the Boy Scout council for three years over rental payments and its association with the City. In the past, the City had offered space to the Council at lower rental rates than other organizations.

In 2003 the City of Philadelphia announced it would adopt policies against anti-gay discrimination. Just weeks later, the Cradle of Liberty Council kicked out openly gay, 18-year old Scout Greg Lattera (See Inclusive Scouting Case Study).

The Philadelphia City Council is demanding that the Cradle of Liberty Council enter into a “fair-market rental agreement” with the City or the Scout Council will be evicted from its property.

Stacey Sobel, executive director of the Philadelphia Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights says the Scout Council is free to do what ever it wishes, but “If they are going to discriminate, the taxpayers shouldn’t be subsidizing it.”
