UNC-Chapel Hill makes LGBT-friendly college list

This update on my previous post on Duke’s #2 spot in best LGBT colleges, from EqualityNC:

Two North Carolina universities were included in “100 Best Campuses for LGBT Students” list in a new book. Equality NC applauds these schools and calls on other campuses to work towards an inclusive climate.

Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill made the list, which is part of a new book, The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students. These campuses’ positive environment, programs and services, and LGBT student coalitions were cause for the distinction.

The book, released August 1, profiles 100 colleges and universities from across the country that offer resources and create a positive living and learning environment for LGBT students. Campus PrideNet, the leading national organization for LGBT and ally student leaders, with support for a team of expert LGBT professionals from the National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education, developed the criteria and a questionnaire for nominations to gather feedback from current LGBT students, faculty and staff regarding personal experiences and opinions about their campus.

“The top 100 colleges and universities profiled in The Advocate College Guide lead the way for the rest of higher education to be LGBT-friendly,” said Campus PrideNet Executive Director, and ENC member Shane Windmeyer, the book’s author.
Equality NC joins Campus PrideNet in saluting these two schools and hopes other North Carolina schools will be encouraged to strengthen their policies and programs for LGBT students.

For more information or to order a copy of the book, visit Campus PrideNet online.

Again… It shouldn’t be a surprise, however sad, that UNCG didn’t make the list. Expect a post on this and what I think should be done later today.
CampusPrideNet is currently working to establish the LGBT-friendly Campus Climate Index, due to be online by August 21, 2006. The Index will be a national online assesment tool to help colleges, faculty, staff and students assess the LGBT-friendly (or not so friendly) natures of their respective schools.
