Stuff from the Youth: Voting, Republicans, Coming Out Day, Strip clubs, NC Pride & more on Lance

Wow… we’re actually having a good week this issue. Here’s some great stuff from The Carolinian (UNCG). You all should definitely check out these articles from the October 10th issue:

Not voting is just… stupid Staff Editorial

So you’ve been told to vote about a thousand times, by professors, parents, friends, and MTV. In fact, someone with a clipboard nags you about registering every time you leave the EUC.

What it means to be Republican Luke McIntyre

Our two-party system comes with a seemingly endless list of disappointments. I have yet to see a single electoral race, at any level of government, where I completely agreed with any candidate. The solutions don’t seem possible. More third party candidates would be great, and an electoral system that actually let them compete would be even better, but, in America, them’s the breaks.

On Oct. 11, summon your strength – there’s power in numbers Kitty Campbell

National Coming Out Day is Oct. 11, and just like last year, I can’t let the day slip by without talking about it – why it’s important, and why you should care even if you’re straight, already out, or convinced that it’s just not worth the risks to come out.

I Can’t Believe I… Went to a gay strip club Melissa Kurland

When a close friend of mine told me one day that he found a great new place he knew I would love, I don’t think I could have prepared myself for the kind of place he was talking about.

Gay demonstrators share the love Brook Taylor

Normally, queers drive me insane. There’s always a larger supply of drama than is necessary and most of us can’t be on time to save our lives, but for a little while at the North Carolina Pride Parade and Festival, none of that seemed to matter. We were all one big gay family.

Oh yeah… and don’t forget to check out the letter to the editor rebuffing my column on Lance Bass last week (actually… I kinda got slammed in it, lol). It was written by, wouldn’t ya’ know… a good friend of mine: Sarah Benedek (our relationship, for some wierd reason allows us to bash each other and get away with it as we both smile and laugh).

Joe Tresh photography click for more picsShe actually told me about her letter before the paper came out. Having our previous conversation and reading the letter, I’ll tell you all what I told Sarah: I’m still comfortable with my opinions on Bass and Lehmkuhl’s (pictured right, click image for more HRC National Dinner pics) lack of deserving for HRC’s award and I’d dare say that my views are in the majority and backed up by those of LGBT activists/bloggers, columnists, (anonymous letter) writers/major HRC contributors and people (see quoted text from link below as well as comments on this Queerty post) across the nation:

Few cheer for Lance,
Reichen’s HRC award

Re “Bye! Bye! Bye! to Lance’s award” (op-ed by Randy Foster, Sept. 8th):

Exactly right. Lance Bass and Reichen Lehmkuhl honored for being gay cartoons? Have not we been subjected to enough of their antics? Their cumulative 15 minutes expired long ago. Lance and Reichen represent almost every stereotype that make most gays, and our political supporters, cringe. The Human Rights Campaign continues in its relentless quest to make itself even less of a political force, much less barely relevant to most gays.

Visibility Award? They should be getting the “Media Whore Award.”

Just another reminder that the “C” in HRC has come to stand for “celebrity.” The problem is not with HRC’s leaders, who are simply doing what it takes to sell tickets. The problem lies in the shallowness of the gay community. Our penchant for demanding everything be a party is what keeps the true heroes of “our” movement for receiving the public recognition they have earned.

Short of pandering to cheap publicity, what in world has Lance Bass done to earn an award for being gay? “Most closeted queen?” Is HRC so hard up for awardees that Lance Bass and Reiken whatever-his-name-is qualify? There are thousands of more qualified — if not more “pop-tarted.”

But… Hey, Sarah… I still love ya! Oh and the letter was good: Short, simple, got the point across. I say it bashd by “diatribe” quite effectively, lol 🙂

i must say, i was a tad bit irritated that the headline over my letter was “Lance and beau deserve HRC award.” i wasn’t necessarily saying they deserved it. . .i was saying it makes sense. Oh well. C’est la vie. Pretty much, i had to get my two cents in because you pretty much irritate me at any given minute of any given day. But you already knew that. 🙂

Oh, and thank you. It was short because it had to be. My original letter was twice the words allowed, haha.

And they totally deserve the award; they’re hot.

    i’m definitely kidding.

Well, about them deserving the award.

  2. Matt says:

    Haha… That’s all I have to say… HaHa.

  3. Matt says:

Oh Sarah… If you want, I’ll let you post the entire letter (the long version which couldn’t be published) as a counter-point here on my blog. I’m not against having a diversity of opinion on here.

If you like the sound of the idea, let me know.

  4. Sarah says:

Well, i would take you up on it except i don’t have the original.

i took the original and whittled it down to where it ended up.
