NC Religious Coalition for Marriage Equality

NCRC4ME Lobby Day

A year ago or so, I witnessed through the activities of my Associate Pastor at Wake Forest Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC, the establishment of the North Carolina Religious Coalition for Marriage Equality.

The Reverend Susan Parker has for the longest time been in the forefront of religious and secular LGBT activism and advocacy for years. Her efforts, along with the efforts of numerous other pastors including the Reverend Jack McKinney of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church (Raleigh, NC), have paid off.

In March 2005, the NC Religious Coalition for Marriage Equality held a succesful lobby day at the North Carolina State Legislature. The point of the day was to let North Carolina know that there were people of faith opposed to a constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples.

The Coalition is now entering 2006 with a great deal of things to do. More than likely, North Carolina will see another attempt at getting an amendment on the ballot. Even though groups like the Coalition and EqualityNC have been successful at stopping such a ballot initiative two years in a row now, there is no guarantee that they will be able to do it again.

The Coalition also has something new and it is something I have been waiting on for a long time, simpy because I am an internet and website geek/dork/junkie. :)Â The Coalition now has a website!

I encourage you all to check out their website (www.ncrc4me.org) and also to sign on to the Coalition’s Statement, either as religious leaders or people of faith in support for marriage equality. You can view the statement here and see the signatories here.
